Anxiety can have many causes, but in most cases the sufferer may feel some combination of tension, fear, insomnia and restlessness where it becomes difficult to relax and find calmness and inner peace.
There may be no apparent cause and only sophisticated inquiry can trace the origins of the anxiety back to a childhood trauma such as separation from a loved parent or sexual abuse.
Today, I see clients who experience anxiety, fear and stress from workplace demands for speed, efficiency and accuracy in an atmosphere of anger, frustration and unreasonable expectations.
All these factors can lead to psychological insecurity with feelings of apprehension, fearfulness, panic attacks and mental strain. These symptoms may translate into physical symptoms such as exhaustion, insomnia and palpitations. If left untreated, symptoms of nausea, constipation/diarrhea, frequency of urination, stomach cramps may develop.
Where there is anger combined with the anxiety there may be hints of irritability and indecision with physical symptoms of headaches and stiffness around the head, shoulders and neck.
If the anxiety is associated with grief there may be feelings of insecurity, hopelessness and fear of loss. Physically, there can be a sensation of shortness of breath and an emotional tearfulness.
Treatment is usually directed at calming and soothing mind, spirit and body inducing a feeling of inner balance. Combinations of reflexology and acupressure can be successful in this respect. With a degree of balance and calmness achieved, treatment can turn to tone and strengthening tired and overworked emotional and physical systems.
